i,ve got 4 plates now all 2 numbers and my initials after ?? KL and think there great put the finishing touch to the cars but not into them when you need to change the letter's to look like somthing it's not and they hold there value or buy wise like me you can make a tidy profit from them

When you say make a tidy profit how did you come about the plates?

I often saw on regtransfer and the like 2 numbers and a letter all above 12k but they were selling on the dvla auction from 6k to 7k tops(highish numbers mind). So when i saw a plate of interest to me come up on the auction I bid for it and and got it. So say i paid 6.5k for the plate plus fees and vat the plate actually cost nearer 9k. So yeah i could also say iv made a tidy profit on that plate but in reality i haven't as i couldn't sell the plate for the 13k that regtransfer say its worth because no one buys them. I haven't lost money but i certainly havent made either.

So just interested to know if you have been acquiring them in a different way ie personal adds or have you also picked them up from auction and your tidy profit is unrealised and your going off of quotation from people like regtransfer that can never sell them at the prices they quote?

You on the other hand may have bought yours 10 odd years ago and then its very much a profit

On a better note for me i have 2 plates that i picked up for £300 each and have been bid a couple of grand by other traders as to us they look very good.

hi got them all from dvla but a few years back now, every time one came up i went to the auction and if it went for a good price i got it if not i walked away every auction is so different one day a plate can go for say 7k but 3 month later the same plate but 2 numbers higher can go for 4.2k bide your time buy smart and your laughing plate's very close to mine now go for a good 3-4k more than i payed for mine and that's at auction in the paper's and mag's they go for a hell of a lot more than that and go up more every year one day i'll sell them and make a lovely lump

put it this way if you put 3k in the bank for 5 year's or buy a "good plate" at auction at the "right price" keep it for 5 years bet your 3k plate is worth more than your 3k in the bank

You know Pikey right here on PH has P1KEY on his Cayman S right?

...nope - didn't realise that! I'll check the plate more closely next time I see the car in case the plate uses different characters to Pikey's car. I did observe it from a hundred yards or so - but I could have sworn I saw what I saw.

Are you sure Ben didn't sell the plate?

When I bought my car it had a short non-aging plate included. I thought - ok good - that's a bonus, although I wasn't really that bothered either way.
Went to pick up the car after it was prepared with my girlfriend...
As we walk up to showroom I point it out, and she says - "oh wow - it's got my initials on it - thanks!"
After I picked my jaw up off the floor , she said "i know it's not for me - but I clearly have the right to drive it anytime I fancy.."
It was really was quite funny..

The 964 is C2 YYY - damm stupid question if you ask me

The Beemer has G 8URY, however with a surname like mine, it was the closed thing I could get.

My little Bro has G 13URY (spaced), just to confuse the BiB's.

Andy, are those German style plates legal in the UK?

Thanks Andy (yet another!)

Just before I picked up my 911, the guys at the garage asked if I wanted any particular letters, such as my initials, at the end of the plate. To be honest, I've never really been a fan of personalised regs, but this was probably going to be my one and only brand new Porsche.

Anyway, GLF was available (as in Goes Like F...), so that's what I chose.

Picked up the car and the ladies loved it. They all thought it stood for Gavin Loves Fiona (the fiancee). Aww, bless. Don't worry, I put them straight...

Doubt it, but it's hardly crime of the century even if I do get pulled for them. Would like to think the BiB have better things to do.

You can get bargains at auction, I picked up 911 GT for just over £3k a few years ago....
THE 911S I think I got for similar, good investments in my humble opinion

Mine below

It was £499 from DVLA so hardly broke the bank.

Andy have you run at the 'ring (public day rather than RMA etc) with the German style plate, know a couple of GB cars that got turned back at the gate with german style GB plates is all, one even was normal uk plate but in pressed metal & with D instead of GB as the country, he had to cover the D with gaffer tape!

Not yet been to the ring with this car, but thanks for the tip. I have a set of legal plates too, so I will take them with me.

But I'm not so sure about this, the only people who can sell there plates at auction are the DVLA, regtransfer are doing it now but not sure who's bidding?

As for what there advertised for doesn't mean that's what they sell for. Find a plate close to yours advertised and i bet it hasn't been sold and the only reason the price is high is because that's what it stands someone in from buying it off the dvla. I'm not " mugging " you off at all as i have an expensive plate and couldn't care less if its worth half of what i paid for it but on the other hand i think its only worth what i paid for it and no more.

As for the idiots at regtransfer how they value plates is beyond me. But they want you to advertise so they big it up hoping that someone who has just won the euro lottery with your initials and number that is some how related to them is going to pay silly money for it. In reality this is very unlikely to happen.

Plates on the dvla auction over the last few years have only gone up marginally if any. You have more chance of making " good " money on a plate if you get the nod from someone at Aston/Fera/Lambo about a next model and relate a VERY good plate to it. Not some shite if you look at it hard enough you can work it out.

I'm not having a dig just wonder how much profit really is in your plates.

Saw LOG 800K on a Ford Focus - class!

I've got a 5 letter plate on mine (passes MOT with all the letters placed together as it's still very legible even though i think in theory it's illegal) and it definitely makes a hell of a lot of difference - looks more like a show car with the plate on

You are very right Bund.

I once made an offer to RegTransfers for one of the plates. I was told by the call centre girl that my offer was lower than the customer had paid for it and so it couldn't be sold for that much as "plates are investments".

I patiently explained maybe she should ask the client first as the plate had been for sale for over 3 years.

She still refused...oh well :-)
