Thats an auction though? I would never buy a car from an auction and I bet 99.9% of private buyers wouldn't either. Cars are cheap there for a reason, and I'll leave the traders to dabble in that world I think...........

Way too scary for your average Joe to buy something like that, unless he had a mechanic in his back pocket. At auctions, do they let you see all the history and check it out? Keep an eye on the number plate and see where it ends up and at what price

I just buy a really old Porsche, whilst it costs me more in fuel than my brand new Alfa did, it's not depreciating by massive amounts as it's already hit its rock bottom. On a dust to dust lifetime cost comparison, it works out cheaper, and its a hell of a lot more fun

As a reference I bought s 968cs with 95k on the clock for £7500. Was advertised at 10k. Car needs remedial work due to age, so felt the bid was fair if not a bit toppy.

Interesting thread...
I have lost about £27k on a very heavily specced 997S Manual which is dissapointing but I am upgrading to a 997tt which has lost even more money than my car so my change up cost works, for me! Comments / advice / challenges welcome - I am buying a March '07 Turbo with 12k miles and lots of carbon, collecting this Friday and am very excited!

Is it just me, or is that 997 not sitting right? It is too low and the front OS wheel camber looks wrong (neg). Is there a story here? Mollytherocker

Please keep discussion of the general Porsche market, limited to this thread. Who put you in charge? Er, nobody, as i'm sure you are aware. It was an attempt to limit the number of tedious threads on the state of the Porsche car market. All you have managed to do is make a tedious thread all the more tedious .

If it's that tedious, why are you reading it?

Because I wanted to check that people were using the thread for the purpose it was created for, general chat about the state of the market, not wise cracks by people diluting a thread with a specific agenda.

Cars are cheap there for a reason, and I'll leave the traders to dabble in that world I think........... Most motor dealers including main franchise dealers source their stock from auctions as the majority of cars come from reputable sources, e.g cars on PCP’s that customers have handed back or ex contract hire cars at the end of their contracts. If you plan ahead you can find out what cars are going through when, who the vendor is and details of miles and sometimes history. With this in mind you can do your own research and if it seems ok you can view the car externally prior to the auction and make your decision.

Theres gonna be a stack of motors not making baloon payments getting handed back early part of next year im told. The new reg will be a write off as a result i recon. I heard the weekend of a lambo gallardo spyder new costs £143 sold for 40k one year old. You gotta now forget the depreation hit and stick with what u got if u owe nothing on it. Wont be too much longer till u hear of 997 gt3rs"s trading at 50k. Believe it or not i am trying to stay positive!!!!!

The true story is probably that the car lost £40k off list as I am quite sure that anyone in an auction hall including myself would expect to pay north of £70k for the car without even thinking twice. Cars are depreciating heavily but there will always be a trader who knows the market prepared to underwrite it.

I noticed that the '00 Forest Green 6TT @ Northways is subject to a 'Tried & Tested' article in this month's 911 & Porsche World . It's being advertised at £30k ...they've had it in stock for months now and it started off with a sticker price of £39k. There are many dealers/independents who have been sat on the same stock for months.
I also see that Porsche Centre Swindon (Lovett's) are now offering to match 'Independent' rates for parts / servicing.

I think the classic market as well as the rarer beasts still seem to be holding up well. The flip side is that those with money don't want to earn very little interest on it so are willing to take a punt on the rarer cars. After all you can't thrash a bank account can you.
